There is a big push right now to improve the post-secondary outcomes of students with disabilities. Just last month there have been two bills introduced that address post-secondary education and training options for students with disabilities.
The following bills were introduced last month in the House of Representative and U.S. Senate.
Customized Approaches to Providing and Building Independent Lives of Inclusion for Transition-aged Youth, or CAPABILITY, Act, H.R.3070-The legislation known as the Customized Approaches to Providing and Building Independent Lives of Inclusion for Transition-aged Youth, or CAPABILITY, Act, H.R.3070 would establish six grants to states to support pre-employment transition services for young people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including autism.
Respond, Innovate, Succeed and Empower, or RISE, Act, S.1585-The bill known as the Respond, Innovate, Succeed and Empower, or RISE, Act, S.1585, spells out that students who already have documentation of a disability can continue to use that same documentation when they enter higher education.
